– as a biopic about an acclaimed photographer, Lee lacks for any visual artistry. As a war film, it is neither emotive nor thrilling. In fact, it’s surprisingly mundane as any kind of movie, and doesn’t hold a candle to contemporaneous works like All Quiet on the Western Front and Civil War, which are both gut-wrenching and spectacular in equal measure. The cast clearly think they’re in a good film and act accordingly, but the script, editing and direction are entirely uninteresting.
