– a definite misstep in plot direction after the high stakes thrills of the last season’s finale. Rather than lean into the unique political opportunities presented by their abrupt entry into The White House, the writers pull away from the politics, preferring to meander their way through the all too tediously familiar territory of marital strife and romantic misadventure. It feels like a more trashy, more prurient show than its prior seasons, and is much more boring as a result. Thankfully, Janney, Whitford and Sewell remain absurdly charismatic, even when Aiden Turner turns up to spoil every scene he’s in.
