– Raw and gritty Western about mormons and injuns, marshals and mercenaries, hits nearly all the requisite notes, from its epic sweeping vistas to its score. For better and worse, it’s in the same vein as The Revenant, both stylistically and narratively, complete with serious bodily harm by animal and obscenely visceral injury. Lots of injury. Like that film, it could do with a little more light to balance the dark, humour to counter the misery, charisma to mitigate the menace. It’s all too heavy and dreary. But fans of the genre will find that easy enough to overlook, immersed as they will be in the glorious, beautiful ravages of the great American wilderness.
