The Young Pope S01 (TV)

– this is a brilliantly original and well performed drama set in the Vatican, quite unlike anything I’ve seen prior. It won’t be to all tastes given its irreverent and often explicit portrayal of the Pope and Cardinals in all their humanity, complete with often ugly flaws and foibles. But it also spends a lot of time contemplating profundity: beauty, life, faith, discipline, parenthood, and of course, love. It’s sometimes infuriating, always very silly, but also affecting, with magnetic performances and inventive, aesthetically pleasing direction. It’s not a masterpiece, nor without its issues, and the Pope himself is decidedly repulsive for most of the series, but it’s a hugely entertaining and spirited journey.
