– Season 1 of an all new Dexter, or Season 9 of the ill-fated original? It feels like the latter, to be honest, albeit with a definite return to at least some semblance of form. For context, I was a massive Dexter fan when it first started, but was progressively disheartened with each new series (in particular from season 4 onwards). By the end of Season 8 I really had little compunction about calling it ‘trash’. So in that light, things have significantly improved. Dexter is funny again, it doesn’t take itself seriously, but it also doesn’t take the piss. It’s glossy, implausible and absurd in all the usual ways Hollywood TV shows are, but it’s also genuinely entertaining and compelling, with appreciative nods to earlier seasons and a vastly improved course correction on a key storyline (Dexter’s son, Harrison). If you’re coming to it new, I don’t know that it’ll make much of an impression, but as a disillusioned fan, I’m at least relieved to be able to think of the show more fondly.
