Mobland S01 (TV)

– this caricature of a London mob thriller is almost always entertaining; fast paced, unpredictable, violent, occasionally funny. If it wasn’t also ridiculous, with a mishmash cast of cockney clowns, village idiots and desperate house wives, it might have been even better. Instead, while Tom Hardy is at his best as Harry, a composed but endlessly put upon fixer, dangerously capable and always a step or two ahead, the rest of the cast are little more than levers for increasingly ludicrous and often annoying plot twists. Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren especially turn in some wonderfully nutty performances, at the expense of verisimilitude, but at times it feels like their Shakespearean comedy doesn’t really belong in the same fictional universe as Harry’s thoughtfully executed gang war. Not that it really matters. If nothing more, the molotov cocktail is a gripping distraction.
