– so forgettable I almost forgot to review it, this is a genuinely astounding true story and consequently a criminally mediocre film. Norton is such an obvious, unctuous creep in every scene it’s impossible to believe his Robert Freegard could have hoodwinked so many smart people. And the most interesting part of the plot – Freegard’s deception – plays second, even third fiddle, to the tedious and unconvincing romance that eventually dooms him. The story deserves a vastly better film.
