28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

– Coming so hot on the heels of its predecessor and with a name that seems descriptive of that film, it would be easy to overlook this sequel entirely (I almost did). In fact, this is the superior film, with Ralph Fiennes on fine form as the empathetic and truly whacko doctor cavorting with zombies, and O’Connell suitably disturbing as leader of a traumatised bunch of satanists. Some of the scenes, particularly near the start, are excessively gratuitous – a staple of the genre, to be sure, but nonetheless unwelcome in a thriller which otherwise leans hard into thought-provoking, philosophical themes. It manages to achieve rewarding closure in its final act, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for the franchise to continue. If it stays at this calibre, I hope it does.
