– even as a massive fan of Vince Gilligan’s previous work (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), I found this a self-indulgent, bloated sci-fi that fails to balance its allegorical and compelling plot with actual entertainment, resulting in a strangely unexciting, even tedious watch, that survives purely on the strength of its genuinely novel story. So it’s pretty galling to reach the end of nine episodes and find the story completely unfinished and most questions still unanswered. If Gilligan’s comments about Season 2 being a long wait away are true, then this show will survive only if people have forgotten how frustratingly unrewarding this first season was.
